Imagine collecting bits and pieces of information over time until you have accumulated many thousands or millions of discreet information gems.  It would be impossible for a mere human, or even a group of humans, to wade through the seemingly infinite pieces of information in order to make sense of it all. But with powerful computers which are capable of retrieving, categorizing, and looking for information at mind-boggling speeds, randomized information can be turned into useful information which can help people in many different ways.

This retrieval and sorting of the gems of information to discover useful information is called ‘information mining.’ It is an apt metaphor, if we think of each new piece of information as a little jewel, and the chaotic way they are stored as the great mountain in which they are buried, then digging into the mountain and retrieving the jewels is what happens when the computer tells us how the bits of information come together into a coherent description of a reality that perhaps before we were unable to discern.
